Scottish Learning Festival 2007

Shoo Fly Publishing having celebrated the outstanding achievement of winning three awards this year, in recognition for their commitment to education, intend to demonstrate how their resources support new developments in the Scottish Curriculum.

Anne Curtis, Founder and Creative Director, Shoo Fly Publishing, says, "We are a small company who work closely as a team to create beautiful and imaginative resources for schools. It is both exciting to bring these resources to Scotland. I believe we meet and share the ethos behind the new Scottish Curriculum by matching inspiration and imagination with educational rigour. We have dedicated an area of our website mapping our resources into the present curriculum with suggestions on how they support new developments."

The Award winning resource, Angel Boy has many Scottish connections including Seal Skull, a beautiful animated book with its version of the traditional Scottish myth of the Selchie, The narration is by teenage Easdale Islander, Jamie Melville.

Anne says... "We travelled five hours up to the Easdale Island from the north east of England to record Jamie and his family... it was wonderful... this part of Scotland is a very special place for me. Seal Skull was inspired by an actual seal skull I found on the beach near Cambletown. I wanted our resource materials to be authentic. I want young people to celebrate their Scottish tradition and culture. I want young people to believe that they are important, that they can make a difference and that they have a future... a future that we all share. I hope this passion and belief in young people comes across."

Shoo Fly Resources are already being used by schools in Aberdeen and West Lothian.

"Angel Boy is a resource which recognises the creativity of teachers and young people. It has a depth and quality which absorbs adults and youngsters alike. Often software focused on literacy and language has a focus on skills as opposed to the creative aspect of language. This software gives the teacher the tools to do both – all of the tools. Shoo Fly have made available all the resources a teacher could wish for, including a superb handbook, audio files, pictures, and whiteboard files. The sophisticated, Gothic feel will appeal to students in upper primary and into secondary and boys will be hooked."
Laura Compton, ICT Curriculum Development Officer, West Lothian LA.

Recognised for their innovative educational resources, designed for use on interactive whiteboards and PCs, Shoo Fly won 3 ERA Awards: Best Primary Resources and Equipment; Best Secondary Resources and Equipment and the Innovation in Education. Ray Barker, Director of BESA and Chair of judges said: "What makes these Awards really different is that they focus on the resources, services and people that really make an impact on learning and the day-to-day work of the teachers in the classroom."
